The First Laptop Ever: GRiD Compass 1101
By stormy at 5 December, 2008, 3:19 pm
The GRiD Compass, arguably the first “clam-shell” laptop ever made was designed in 1979 by Bill Moggridge, a British industrial designer.
At a price of $8150, it was clearly not a computer for everyone. The target users were businessmen and government officials. It was also used by the U.S. Army “in the field” and on NASA Space Shuttles during the 90’s.

The 5kg (11lb) computer featured a sharp 320×200px electroluminescent (ELD) display, an Intel 8086 processor, 340kb magnetic bubble memory and a flat-back magnesium alloy case. Floppy drives and hard drives could be connected to it externally.
