N97 - Nokia’s Idea Of The iPhone

32GB, 5.0MP Carl Zeiss camera, QWERTY keyboard - that’s how you could describe the Nokia N97 in a sentence.

And there’s much more. You can clearly see that the mobile phone giant has tried to make it better than the iPhone in every aspect.

The main difference from the other N-series mobiles is the touch-screen, which is exactly the same size as the display of the iPhone - 3.5″.

Nokia’s vice-president, A.Vanjoki, also mentioned something about manual-managing, but we can’t be sure that N97 has it.

Anyway, it seems that Nokia has finally understood that to compete with modern phones (not only the iPhone), you don’t only need a touch-screen, but also a good amount of memory, of which the N97 has a whole 32 GB! Furthermore, you can expand it with a 16GB microSD!

The software and user interface

Nokia is developing a brand new Symbian OS for the N97. It will be called So-Lo (Social Location). The Beta version is said to be ready, but some things still need improving. So-Lo will be connected to GPS.
But that’s not all - the N97 will have an even cooler app, “Point & Hint”. You could say that it’s virtual guide in foreign cities. If you point the phone at a statue, it immediately gives you information about it. Also, pointing it at a cinema, it tells you accurate starting times of films and also shows the newest trailers.

The UI is arguably a feature where Apple still has the lead. N97’s interface looks very Nokia-ish but has been modified to take advantage of the extra capabilities of the smartphone. This video shows the interface in detail:
