Google’s Android Project Proceeds

For some time already, it has been looking like Google tries to spread itself into every major market of the tech industry. The most evident parts of the project are the Google Chrome browser, which has already received much positive feedback, and, maybe even more importantly, the Android mobile software platform.

After the iPhone was announced in early 2007, Google’s small mobile division accelerated its product development and less than a year later, in November 2007, Google unveiled that it had joined forces with several large companies, including Intel, NVIDIA, Motorola and T-Mobile to form the Open Handset Alliance, whose goal is to develop new standards for mobile technology. They have since been joined by Sony Ericcson.

Development went on, and in October this year, the first commercial phone with Android inside, the T-Mobile G1 was released. About the same time Android technology went open source, giving developers extra freedom, as opposed to the iPhone, which is almost completely controlled by the App Store and its rules.

Now, with the smartphone market growing, many technology manufacturers have announced that they will develop hardware for the Android platform to run on,

Just last week, a special version of the G1 was released exclusively to developers, supporting all SIM cards and customized to support new builds of the operating system and its apps.

More Android devices are expected to be released throughout the next year and while the software is still quite buggy at the moment, it has already begun to emerge as a serious competitor in the high-end phone market and only the following years will tell how this thing ends…

Meanwhile, the rumors about Google’s doings continue, even including a supposed new operating system.
