Google Developing A Mystery OS!?

By stormy at 8 December, 2008, 7:47 pm

Net Applications has released some shocking information that is spreading around the “internets“. Net Applications is a service that uses 40,000 software sensors on websites around the globe to measure web traffic and compile stats.

Some time ago, Net Applications shocked us with the fact that Microsoft’s share of the world’s computers has dropped under 90%, the lowest for quite some time… Many software companies seemed to get a lot of motivation from those news, and looks like Google’s one of them.

Net Applications basically tracks all operationg systems that are known to humankind, even the unreleased Windows 7. But for the first time, something strange is happening. Two thirds of traffic from Google.com (Google employees) use a well known OS like Windows or Mac OS X, but one third of Google employees have a mysterious OS that cannot be traced by Net Applications. NA has never seen anything like this.

If Google really is developing an operating system, it would probably be a modification of Android OS, Google’s recently released OS for mobile phone.

Google probably isn’t trying to take on Microsoft with a full desktop OS, but a network application infrastructure would fit Google’s field of work well.

“I think they could be working on an application infrastructure, because an operating system really connotes the stuff that makes the hardware and software talk to each other, and they are not in that business,” said Clay Ryder, president of The Sageza Group.

“But as an infrastructure for building network apps, I would think Google would be working on something like that,” he continued. “They’ve been rolling out more and more freebie apps and I would think they would eventually want to make some money the old fashioned way. It would make a lot of sense that they would want to have a network application infrastructure that they could roll out most anywhere.”

So if you think about it, it’s all perfectly logical. What would come next after Google Apps, the Google Toolbar and the newly released Google Chrome?

Google OS? I’ve thought about Google making an OS, that would certainly be cool.
Google has a good reputation, so they would probably be a tough rival to Microsoft and Apple.

I personally don’t like MS, neither Apple, so I’m waiting for the new OS, if it’s all true.

I think Google should just concentrate on getting some of their existing stuff working better and out of beta. Maybe getting Chrome deployed on some more platforms rather than dabbling in the OS market.
