Windows 7 Pre-Beta Updates

Here are the latest news from Microsoft’s announcement on Windows 7 and the updates that followed.

There have been many improvements and additions to the OS, mostly to the visual appearance and UI. In fact, the only thing that suggests that Windows 7 is a major release is the completely redesigned and improved UI. Everything is practically same under the bonnet.

The new taskbar is one of the most evident of the improvements. It will now only show a task’s icon. A right click on the icon will show options for that specific task or “jump lists” as Microsoft likes to call them.

Another thing worth mentioning is the ability to scroll through open programs using the taskbar, called “peeking”. Top level windows will become transparent to show the windows scrolled through.

You can also peek at the desktop. Which is especially important, as the sidebar from Vista has now been lost and the gadgets are released onto the desktop.

The Start Menu also has jump lists and everything is placed in your reach. The recently- and frequently used programs are now thrown right onto the side of the Start Menu,  but you can always put something else instead of them if you want.

Microsoft has also dramatically changed explorer and introduced a new system of “libraries” that should give you a better visual understanding of where your files are.

We’ll keep you posted on new updates and improvements. In the meantime, you might want to subscribe to our feed.
